About Me

Me

Hello! I'm Tess Young, but online I use the handle Chic Monster (that's pronounced sheek, not chick). I'm an artist and student who is very passionate about the power of games and ice cream. I like to spend my days drawing and illustrating, designing and playing games, pigging out on, or when on a diet, dreaming of pigging out on junk food, listening to sexy, sexy German progrock, and writing. I like to think life has a purpose, but am also putting all my chips on 'Robot' when it comes to the whole 'what will bring about the Apocalypse' debate.

When I was very young I adored playing pretend, and that active imagination has stayed with me for as long as I can remember. I lived a good portion of my life believing that animation and film was the most immersive way people could experience others' creations, but in high school I discovered video games, and it changed everything for me. I have a lot of ground to make up compared to many of my peers who have been gaming for a lot longer than I have, but as I learn more and more about the world of games my love for it only grows.

Mission Statement

As a Latin-american female, I struggle with the reality of games as a white male dominated industry. Although I've been happy to discover that there are many more minority gamers and designers out there than one would expect, I've still experienced an attitude of elitism in the industry that shouldn't be there. My goal in life is to be part of a force that opens the door for all people to enjoy all kinds of games, and encourage those who would break the stereotype of what a "gamer" looks and acts like.

Stuff I Do

Viva Juego
I'm the host of the VERY COOL podcast "Viva Juego" with my good friend Zach Urtes, where we talk to other developers and discuss games. My mom gives it 10/10  stars "if only you didn't use so much profanity".  Check it out here!

The Blog

In this blog, I invite readers to join me in my journey as I record my day-to-day activities and also take a look at iconic video games as someone who really is playing them for the first time, trying to understand how they can benefit humanity and make life richer.

  1. I just found this blog while looking for something about Myst's presence at GDC. I'm enjoying it! I always like reading about games from the perspective of someone who's new to them. Almost everyone who plays games grew up with them, and it's fun to be reminded that not everyone has the same "vocabulary."

It's sadly true that the "gamer" community tends to be strongly gendered, not just in the content of games but also in the sort of gatekeeping people do to see who's a "true gamer" or whatever nonsense. So keep it up!
